HONOLULU — Hawaii Health Director Neal Palafox delivered a presentation on Jan. 5 before the state Senate in which he claimed that the level of hexavalent chromium in Honolulu's drinking water does not pose an immediate threat to public health, the Star Advertiser reported.
In a recent study, the Environmental Working Group found that the tap water in several U.S. cities contains high levels of the toxic metal hexavalent chromium.
Honolulu ranked among the most highly contaminated with 2.00 parts per billion (ppb).
Palafox stated that the 2 ppb of hexavalent chromium found by the environmental research group falls within an acceptable range cited by California officials, the article stated.
Health officials in California have recently proposed a revised public health goal of 0.02 ppb for hexavalent chromium in drinking water, but the goal does not require compliance, according to the story.
Palafox cited state health studies that show a continuing reduction in stomach cancers in Hawaii since 1975 and stated that he would expect incidences of stomach cancers to remain the same if hexavalent chromium was present in significant levels, the story reported.
