Hawaii health official: Hexavalent chromium does not pose significant threat

Friday, January 07, 2011

HONOLULU — Hawaii Health Director Neal Palafox delivered a presentation on Jan. 5 before the state Senate in which he claimed that the level of hexavalent chromium in Honolulu's drinking water does not pose an immediate threat to public health, the Star Advertiser reported.
In a recent study, the Environmental Working Group found that the tap water in several U.S. cities contains high levels of the toxic metal hexavalent chromium.
Honolulu ranked among the most highly contaminated with 2.00 parts per billion (ppb).
Palafox stated that the 2 ppb of hexavalent chromium found by the environmental research group falls within an acceptable range cited by California officials, the article stated.
Health officials in California have recently proposed a revised public health goal of 0.02 ppb for hexavalent chromium in drinking water, but the goal does not require compliance, according to the story.
Palafox cited state health studies that show a continuing reduction in stomach cancers in Hawaii since 1975 and stated that he would expect incidences of stomach cancers to remain the same if hexavalent chromium was present in significant levels, the story reported.

A CONSPIRACY TO DENY RIGHTS

We were housed in a basement of what is now a former Costco building, with an air-conditioner as the only ventilation. When I noticed mold growing in a hole, in the wall beneath the air-conditioner, adjacent to the room where I sometimes, but mostly my co-workers would eat lunch, I asked them about it and was told that management was made aware of it and did nothing. I decided to inform management myself, considering the untruths I had previously heard from some. I was thanked by the assistant to the woman in accounting who handled the repairs for the building.

I did not think it was a major undertaking by a very successful company to fix this problem, and was surprised at the length of time it was taking to address the situation, so I informed OSHA, Aug. 2003. This is when things started to go further south. Coincidentally, the day after going to the OSHA offices, the next day at work, my supervisor stated to a co-worker, "Vernon went to OSHA." This information was not given to her or any co-worker, by me.

When I went to OSHA, the employee did not give me any type of reference number, or write one in the space provided on the complaint form, nor did she inform me at that time that mold is not OSHA'S jurisdiction, which is what I was told when I went to check on the status of the complaint. Neither, did the employee inform me of laws governing discrimination. I was also told - it not being OSHA'S jurisdiction - the complaint was referred to the Department of Health. It was like pulling teeth to get an answer as to what office at the DOH it was referred to. Needless to say I could not inquire about the possible disposition of the complaint, not knowing where to inquire.

Hawai'i Crash Data Won't Stay A State Secret
By Rob Perez

After years of denying researchers, reporters and others access to Hawai'i crash data, the state said yesterday it intends to make available its massive volume of traffic accident information dating to 1986, a move that analysts say could help make Island roads safer.

LAWSUITS FEARED

The DOT maintained that the information was not public and would expose the state to greater liability in traffic-injury lawsuits if released.

Eviction fears silence many Hawaii renters

By Mary Vorsino

'ONLY A MATTER OF TIME'

Durham, of Legal Aid, said if the city or state cites a landlord for a hazard, the tenant cannot be evicted until the hazard is repaired. Still, there is no protection for the renter afterward, which means many tenants choose not to speak and sometimes fix it themselves.
